full product view of a SolRx 1000-Series 1780 (8 bulb) Full Body Panel Device, for home UVB Phototherapy

home-phototherapy-6138Convenient, effective, and economical; these are the reasons why, since 1992, thousands of patients have chosen and found relief using the SolRx 1000‑Series Full Body Panel for UVB home phototherapy.

An independent medical study has shown that these Solarc designed and manufactured devices are “very effective in comparison with hospital therapy.” The study confirms that “all patients on home therapy were satisfied with their treatment, plan to continue it, and recommend it to others in similar situations.” Click here to learn more.

These 6-foot high full-body units use exactly the same Philips UVB-Narrowband /01 (311 nm) medical lamps, as do phototherapy clinics throughout the world. UVB-NB is by far the most common waveband used by dermatologists for treating skin disorders.

Treatments are taken on one side, and then the other. Decades of experience have shown that this is the most practical and cost effective system for home phototherapy, and many dermatologists use these units as well. The SolRx 1000‑Series has proven to be the best solution for nearly everyone.

Solarc’s 1000‑Series “Narrowband-UVB” units use Philips TL100W/01‑FS72 (311 nm) bulbs. These are by far the most common UVB-NB bulbs used in North America. Solarc Systems is Canada’s only Philips authorized OEM and distributor for these medical lamps. We are located near Barrie, Ontario, Canada; about 1 hour north of Toronto. Come visit our showroom!

All products are designed and manufactured in Canada. The SolRx 1000‑Series was designed in 1992 by a lifelong psoriasis patient, professional engineer, and ongoing user of SolRx products. Many thousands of devices have been sold worldwide.

Design Concept

narrowband uvb 0131p

The key to the SolRx 1000‑Series Full Body Panel is how it distributes the light. Your body is not flat so the device has parabolic reflectors behind the two outermost bulbs to amplify their output and increase the amount of light delivered to the sides of your body. Combined with the central band of the unit that does not have a reflector (the white band down the center where the timer and labels are located), there is a great improvement in the evenness and symmetry of light distribution across your body. This is clearly shown in the picture where the outer bulbs appear much wider than the inner bulbs.

This design also makes for a relatively wide unit (29″ overall), providing adequate coverage for larger people. The width across the outer lamps is very wide: 22.5″ center to center, compared to only 14″ for one of our competitor’s models!

The various 1000-Series models all use the same main frame and differ only in the waveband type and number of ultraviolet bulbs. Within the model number, the third digit indicates the number of bulbs. For example, a 1760 has 6 bulbs. The suffix describes the waveband type with UVB-NB being by far the most common.

A device with more bulbs provides shorter treatment times. It follows that the best device value can be determined by simply comparing their cost-per-watt. For example, for a 1790UVB-NB, divide its cost by its 1000 watts of power, and compare it to that of other competitive units. The 1000‑Series generally always has the lowest cost-per-watt and the highest value.

The pictures below describe the various models.

narrowband uvb 0012

1790UVB-NB
10 Bulbs, 1000 Watts

Increasingly in popularity, our most powerful device will provide the shortest treatment times. It is the best choice for treating darker skinned psoriasis patients, or for those with a previous history of needing larger UVB-Narrowband doses. If a patient is known to be responsive to Narrowband UVB, and if cost is not an issue, the 1790UVB‑NB would be preferred. It provides the lowest cost per bulb of all SolRx UVB-Narrowband devices.

narrowband uvb 0044

1780UVB-NB
8 Bulbs, 800 Watts

Our most popular 1000-Series device. The 1780UVB‑NB provides reasonable treatment times for most psoriasis patients (1 to 5 minutes per side), and ample power for vitiligo or eczema treatment. It is also available in a 220 to 240 volt version called the 1780UVB‑NB‑230V.

narrowband uvb 8014

An important feature of the SolRx 1000‑Series Full Body Panel is that the bulbs are as close to the floor as absolutely possible, minimizing the need for you to stand on a platform to treat the lower portion of your legs and the top of your feet. Most competitive units are raised up much higher from the floor, making a platform necessary for many patients. This picture shows that the dimension from the bottom of the fluorescent tube glass to the floor is only about 2 inches.

narrowband uvb 0079

The device is usually mounted flat up against a wall, and at only 3 1/2 inches thick, it takes an absolute minimum of space in your home. The bottom rests on the floor, and the top is fastened to the wall using two simple brackets as shown.

narrowband uvb 8062

The 1000-Series unit can also be mounted in a corner, but this takes more floor space and if anything is dropped behind the device, it may have to be dismounted for retrieval.

narrowband uvb 0114

The mounting brackets are permanently fastened to the top of the unit at the back, and are simply rotated into position when needed. Two screws and two drywall anchors are supplied to make the connection. It is not necessary that the screws be fastened to a wall stud because the unit’s weight is entirely on the floor. The brackets basically only keep the unit from falling forward. Nonetheless, it is important that they be installed.

narrowband uvb 0103

The bottom of the unit has four heavy-duty rubber bumpers to rest on the floor. It is acceptable for the device to rest on a carpeted floor.

narrowband uvb 8111

The SolRx 1000-Series device uses a standard 3-prong grounded wall outlet available in most homes in North America (120 Volts AC, 60 Hertz, single phase, NEMA 5-15P plug). There are no special electrical requirements. For those with 220 to 240 volt supply power, Solarc makes the 1780UVB‑NB‑230V.

narrowband uvb 0088

The device is hand assembled using plated machine screws with nylon insert locknuts wherever possible. These locknuts ensure that the joints stay tight and the unit retains rigidity. The device is shipped fully assembled.

narrowband uvb 3049

The result is a durable product with compact dimensions and reasonable weight. One person can normally handle the unit, grasping it from behind as shown. However, it is preferred that two persons handle it, one at each end. If care is taken, the device can be moved with the bulbs in place.

Ultraviolet Bulbs & UV Wavebands

ultraviolet wavebands 4034a

The SolRx 1000‑Series Full Body Panel can interchangeably use any of the following bulb types, each providing a different waveband of ultraviolet light. Unless noted, these bulbs are the North American “FS72” length (nominally 6 feet) and use “recessed double contact” (RDC) endpins to prevent their use in cosmetic tanning devices.

UVB Narrowband Philips TL100W/01‑FS72
These are the “short” version of Philips 6-foot UVB-Narrowband bulbs. They are designed to be interchangeable with the North American “FS72” length bulb. Note: Philips also makes a slightly longer version of their 6-foot UVB-Narrowband bulb called the TL100W/01. They are about ½ inch longer and will fit into the 1000-Series, but rather tightly.

UVB Broadband FS72T12/UVB/HO
In this case, Solarc private label is made in the USA. UVB-Broadband has 4 to 5 times more skin-burning potential than UVB-Narrowband, so treatment times are typically quite short and greater care is needed to avoid sunburn.

UVA (PUVA) F72T12/BL/HO
In this case, Light Sources brand, is made in the USA. While these UVA bulbs are interchangeable, Solarc does not actively sell any 1000‑Series UVA devices. No User’s Manuals are available. PUVA users will have to consult with their physician for treatment protocols.

UVA1 Philips TL100W/10R
The Philips TL100W/10R UVA1 bulb is about ½ inch longer than the other FS72 length bulbs, and after adding the necessary RDC adapters they will fit into the 1000-Series, but rather tightly. Solarc does not actively sell any 1000‑Series UVA1 devices. No User’s Manuals are available.

understanding narrowband uvb1

Narrowband UVB is well established as the phototherapeutic treatment of choice for psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and Vitamin D deficiency. More than 99% of SolRx devices use this waveband.

narrowband uvb 0095

The guards on either side of the unit swing open to access the bulbs. The sides of the guards are held in place with three Velcro pads.

narrowband uvb 0065

The anodized aluminum reflectors behind the bulbs reflect about 90% of the incident UVB light and are mirror-like in appearance. They greatly improve the device’s total UV light output.

Product Features: Timer, Switchlock, Electrical

Artisan Timer and Switchlock Close-Up in SolRx E-Series

The controls for the SolRx 1000‑Series Full Body Panel are simple and straightforward, as confirmed by an independent medical study which stated: “Twenty-three patients (92%) felt that the ease of operation of the home unit was high, and only two patients said that it was average.”

A digital countdown timer provides dosage control to the second and has a maximum time setting of 20:00 minutes:seconds. A very useful feature of this timer is that it always remembers the last time setting, even if power is removed for a long period of time. This means that you will always have your last treatment time setting for reference. The time is set by simply pressing the up or down arrow keys, and the lights are turned on/off by pressing the START/STOP button. The lights turn off automatically when the timer counts down to 00:00, and then the display resets to the last time setting. The timer’s red display is easily seen through the amber-coloured patient goggles supplied. The timer does not require prescription refills from your doctor. The timer’s output relay carries a UL-508 [NEMA-410] ten Amp (10Amp) “Ballast” rating and has been tested by Solarc in a 1790 (8 Amps) for more than 30,000 on-off cycles – that’s 2 treatments per day for 41 years. The timer is top quality, UL/ULc certified, and made in the USA.

A keyed switchlock is the main power disconnect for the device. By removing and hiding the key, unauthorized use can be prevented. This is an important feature, especially if children are around because mistaking this medical UVB device for a UVA tanning machine can have serious consequences.

The labels are made from Lexan® and will not fade.

narrowband uvb 01021

The back cover is held by 12 screws and can be removed to expose the electrical components. The power supply cord is 3 metres long (10 feet), minimizing the chances that you will need an extension cord.

narrowband uvb 01721

With the back cover removed, you can see, from the top: the timer, switchlock and ballasts (4 for this 1780UVB‑NB). Modern high-frequency electronic ballasts are used to maximize UV light power and minimize weight. All electrical components are UL/ULc/CSA certified and readily serviceable with common tools.

narrowband uvb 01221

For maximum durability, the frame is made from 20 gauge steel (about as thick as a dime) and then powder painted white to create a beautiful, long lasting finish. There are a minimum of plastic parts to UV-age, crack and break.

User’s Manual & Treatment Method

A critically important feature of the SolRx‑1000 Series Full Body Panel is its comprehensive User’s Manual. It has been relentlessly developed for over 25 years by actual device users and vetted by a variety of dermatology professionals. It includes a wealth of information so you can maximize your treatment results. Most importantly, it includes detailed Exposure Guideline Tables with treatment times for: psoriasis, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis (eczema). The tables provide a complete treatment protocol based on your skin type (not applicable for vitiligo), the power of the device, and the UVB waveband. The User’s Manual also includes:

  • Warnings about who should not use the device (phototherapy contraindications)
  • General warnings about UVB phototherapy and equipment safety
  • Installation considerations, assembly, and setup
  • How to determine your skin type
  • Body positioning and other tips
  • Treatment procedure
  • Psoriasis long term maintenance program
  • Device maintenance, bulb replacement, and troubleshooting
  • Several years of Solarc’s unique phototherapy calendar, so you can keep track of your treatments

The value of this User’s Manual has been recognized by the Ottawa home phototherapy study which stated: “Nurses and dermatologists who do not operate a phototherapy center should be aware of the detailed instructions provided by Solarc Systems. Their [the dermatologist’s] role becomes more one of professional follow-up rather than one of education on the operation of the home unit.” The 1000‑Series User’s Manual is available in English, French, and Spanish. It is printed on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper and bound in a 3-hole folder so you can easily photocopy pages if needed.

Information for treating Vitamin D deficiency is provided in a separate document called the Vitamin D User’s Manual Supplement, which is available on request.

The following pictures show some of the possible treatment positions. For all positions, the patient maintains a minimum distance of 8 to 12 inches from the bulbs.

home phototherapy 6136

The traditional treatment positions for home phototherapy using a panel is first with the front side of the body facing the device. The position is held until the time expires. Note the coverage provided by this 1000‑Series unit. The model is 5ft-10in and 185lbs.

home phototherapy 61381

Then the patient turns around, restarts the timer and treats the back side. It is important that the ultraviolet protective goggles always be used. For males, unless affected, it is recommended that both the penis and scrotum be covered using a sock.

home phototherapy 6147

For people that need treatment on their sides, this could be another position. The arm is held up to allow the light to reach the side of the torso. The hand could be used to cover the side of the face.

home phototherapy 6143

There are many alternative methods. With practice, the patient can develop a custom positioning system to apply light to those areas needing it the most. An important consideration is to avoid significantly overlapping treatment sides, which could result in local overexposure and sunburning.

home phototherapy 6148

Some people may wish to reduce the amount of light applied to the face. This can be done by wearing a mask or blocking the light with your hands as shown here.

home phototherapy 6149

Here is another way to block the face using the hands. In this case, the elbows are getting maximum exposure because they are closest to the light source.

home phototherapy 6151

To further minimize light to the face and more fully treat the lower leg, a sturdy stool can be used.

home phototherapy 6164

Other areas of the body can be protected by simply wearing clothing. The clothing could be modified by cutting some of it away to expose certain areas.

home phototherapy 6152

Very specific body sites can be targeted with a panel. In this case, the outside of the right leg is getting maximum exposure.

home phototherapy 6156

Or in this case, the left elbow and left knee are being targeted. There are many, many possibilities.
